Acheson Doyle Partners restored and renovated the former Webster Hotel, a 1906 National Register Property on West 45th Street near Fifth Avenue, into both a new hotel and a new home for the 100-year-old Chemist’s Club of New York.
The design involved a full renovation of the 12-story building and penthouse building shell. Significant architectural details of the original building were carefully preserved and restored at the ground floor as well as individual rooms under a New York State sponsored historical preservation tax credit program.
The scope of work also included a complete facade restoration, new roof and new facade lighting. The original cast iron structure was reinforced with concrete for the anticipated enlargement of the penthouse into a fully occupied floor.
In addition to the restoration and renovation of the former Webster Hotel, Acheson Doyle Partners designed the new space for the Chemist’s Club of New York. Acheson Doyle Partners provided full architectural design and layout services for the entire club facility that occupies the first three floors and the basement of the historic building.
A formal dining room, club lounge, and club bar occupy the ground floor level with banquet facilities on the second floor. The design was a mix of historically preserved and brand new spaces including a new gourmet kitchen and numerous serving pantries.
ADP designed the basement level to house the world renowned Chemist’s Library which was reworked with a high density storage system, computerized information retrieval systems and comfortable reading & research areas.
The project was completed in a 9-month period with highly skilled scagliola restoration artists working side by side with heavy construction teams.
Throughout the decade, Acheson Doyle Partners has served as the building’s architect with regard to successive design and construction projects. In 1996 and 1998, additional hotel rooms were added on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th floors, as well as the relocation of the Club Bar to the ground floor Rumford Hall. The penthouse enlargement was approved in 2000 with compliance under the Midtown Zoning Resolution and completed in 2001.
