Fonthill Castle, The College of Mount St. Vincent, Riverdale, NY

View of North Tower

The Landmarks designated Fonthill Castle, located on the campus of the College of Mount St. Vincent, was built for the actor Edwin Forrest by Thomas L. Smith in 1849.  This structure, with Norman and Gothic elements, was purchased in 1856 by the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent De Paul, and is now the Elizabeth Seton Library of the College of Mount St. Vincent. The highest of its six granite towers rises to 70 feet and some architectural details were inspired by the Fonthill Abbey in England.

Acheson Doyle Partners developed a conservation strategy for restoring this historic structure (listed in the National Register of Historic Places) to its original grandeur.  The first step in the restoration was complete roof and flashing replacement at each of the five roofs.  Particular attention was given to the copper flashing and waterproofing details at the stone masonry walls and the crenellated parapets. The second step was to repair and replace both the internal and external drainage systems to ensure the longevity of the masonry construction.  The final step was to restore the existing landmarked windows.  Paint samples were analyzed to determine the original color, while the existing paint was removed from the window frames in situ.  Existing wood window sashes were stripped of paint and existing window hardware was repainted.  Restored windows were caulked, sealed and repainted in accordance with New York City Landmarks approved finishes.
