ADP designed this 8,000 sf, two-level gallery for New York’s oldest commercial Old Masters gallery in Manhattan’s midtown art district. The gallery specializes in 15th through 19th Century European art, and also features a small, adjacent modern gallery. The owners desired an “Old World” ambience, in which traditional architectural details such as paneled doors and elaborate moldings were utilized to create an appropriate venue for the presentation and viewing of their works of art. The design integrates larger galleries and smaller viewing rooms for “treasures” which are organized around a two-level library and archives center, detailed in rich cherry paneling. The library serves as the symbolic heart of the treasures from which their provenance can be researched. This world-renowned art gallery functions as a microcosm of a full-scale museum containing: exhibition and viewing spaces, archival and reference areas, and storage and shipping areas. Acheson Doyle Partners also designed custom storage systems and furniture, including desks, chairs, and display pedestals.
