The Sherry-Netherland Hotel Restoration

January 22, 2026

ADP Architects orchestrated the restoration of a Raphael-inspired mural in the lobby of the Sherry-Netherland Hotel. The project, which involved peeling years of plaster and paint from a water-damaged mural, was performed by EverGreene Architectural Arts. Thirteen years after the restoration, the lobby is kept meticulously clean.

Project Facts:

Sector: Residential, Hospitality

Location: New York, NY

Scope: Architectural Design and Planning; Historic Preservation

Project Type: Interior Restoration, Interior Renovations

Status: Ongoing

The Sherry-Netherland commissioned Joseph Aruta to paint the original mural, knowing that Aruta’s oeuvre included murals within the Downtown Athletic Club, Bowery Savings Bank and Pennsylvania Hotel.

To recover Aruta’s work at the Sherry-Netherland, preservationists stripped back the layers of paint using razors that were an inch wide, as well as carefully applying gallons of solvent.

A total of 4,000 man hours were lovingly poured into the restoration of Aruta’s Neoclassical mural.

Today, the marvelous lobby welcomes the residents of the Sherry-Netherland with Art Deco grace, charm and wonder.

ADP Architects has renovated more than 150 apartments in the Sherry-Netherland over 40 years.

David C. Acheson, AIA, Founding Principal, has seen almost every apartment at the Sherry-Netherland and has helped its owners achieve their highest residential dreams.
